Redact scans and text PDFs while keeping the page layout

You want to remove selected details permanently. Load a supported text document or a PDF, including a scan, then review or add selections. TXT, MD, RTF, DOCX and ODT produce the same format with redaction markers. Every PDF produces a new PDF with covered areas and the visual page layout retained. There is no key and the removed details cannot be restored. The remaining content may still identify someone.

How it works, step by step

  1. Prepare PDF support before disconnecting and acknowledge that this mode is irreversible.
  2. Mark areas manually on a scan. For text PDFs, also review the engine's suggested areas against the page.
  3. Add, move and resize rectangles with a pointer or numeric fields and the keyboard. Undo changes or repeat a rectangle across pages.
  4. Choose the resolution and image format. During export, gallanon processes pages one at a time, covers the pixels and builds a new PDF.
  5. Inspect the downloaded result. After generating redaction, the app releases its source and mapping references; you cannot return to review that result.

Drawing a rectangle over PDF text leaves the underlying content intact. gallanon instead makes new page images with the coverage burned into their pixels. It does not embed original PDF pages or the original scan image behind an overlay.

Scans receive black rectangles. Detected text regions may show [REDACTED] when the label is readable. TXT, MD, RTF, DOCX and ODT use text redaction labels.

Example use

You have scanned case papers with signatures and stamps. Mark the areas that should not be shared and download a new PDF. The same workflow works on a PDF whose text can be selected.

What to check

Pseudonymized data remains personal data. A redacted document may also identify someone through its remaining context.
